How Often Should You Tune Up Your Bike?

Regular tune-ups keep your bike safe, quiet and fun to ride, and they save money by catching small problems before they become big ones.

A simple schedule

  • Casual riders: a tune-up once or twice a year.
  • Regular riders and commuters: every few months, or about every 1,000 miles.
  • E-bikes: more often. Extra weight and speed wear brakes, chains and tires faster.
  • Mountain bikes: after muddy seasons, plus suspension service as the manufacturer recommends.

Signs your bike needs attention

  • Skipping, slow or noisy shifting
  • Brakes that feel soft, squeal or rub
  • A dry, rusty or noisy chain
  • Wobbly wheels or frequent flats
  • Creaks, clicks or rattles

Easy care between tune-ups

  • Check tire pressure before every ride
  • Wipe and lube your chain every few rides, more after rain
  • Give the bike a quick look for loose bolts or worn brake pads
  • Keep it clean and stored out of the weather
